Never get cunning.. Lesson from PM Vajpayee

My experience and lessons with #Vajpayee.

I was private secretary to Union Cabinet Minister Barnala in 1999 and because of Jayalalithaa's withdrawal of support to NDA govt, there was turmoil. Subramaniam Swamy & Sonia wanted NDA to fall and had solicited Jaya's help. Even their tea meeting in Delhi was hailed as a storm in a tea cup.

A think tank calculated that if the govt had the support of three ADMK MPs in Lok Sabha, Vajpayee govt may survive. My Minister asked me to talk to my erstwhile colleague and friend who was Sasikala's husband , M Natarajan. I didn't have a mobile then and had  MN's land line number. But MN was not picking my calls. I contacted one Prabhakara in South Ex2 who was introduced to me by MN. He even had a Toyota car with Tamilnadu regd which he claimed was presented by MN. Prabhakara arrived at the residence of Minister Barnala on Tughlak road. He sought the details of the deal. We promised to revert in short time.

Minister called and invited Minister Pramod Mahajan for a meeting and we met. Mahajan promised a cabinet Minister post for MN if gov survived the no confidence vote. I conveyed the message to Prabhakara and who in my presence called MN on his mobile and requested him to do the needful and detailed him the benefits.  MN said he will revert the next day. He never did and Prabhakara's calls did reach a dead end. Few years later MN confessed to me that as a loyalist he could never betray Jaya thou she had imagined otherwise. In fact we needed only two MPs and we had enticed one on our own.

We escalated the issue to PM. He called us all immediately to his residence. Speaking softly he told us that we should never be cunning to preserve and protect anything including  government. That alone will set apart his govt as unique under all conditions. He advised us to drop the idea.

Next day, the Vajpayee govt fell. By one vote. Imagine what a Congress govt or a Dravidian party would have done under the circumstances.Power corrupts but not all.

That was the first and last time I met PM Vajpayee in close proximity. But his lessons linger on.. Never get cunning to achieve anything. We should never ever manipulate, twist, practice subterfuge in our private and public lives for Karma is watching all of us.
Much maligned MN also proved that he was a loyalist par excellence despite huge temptations of favours.

Miracles of Mahaperiyava - Chapter I

Shri Chandrasekara Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam , the finest among sages of the last millennia, continues to touch and heal the lives of believers going beyond the limitations of caste, religion, linguistics and nations. Devotees are struck in awe when incredible stories of His miracles are shared by Queens and Kings, Presidents and Prime Ministers as well by celebrities of many hue and colour. Having experienced His miracles first hand, I went about on a search to know the other common lives that were blessed by our Sage but hitherto were never revealed in public. This is compilation of a series of first hand reports. Hope you will be inspired by this narration. All the stories are real life incidents and are verifiable. Story #1 KBR worked in TVS group of companies at Madurai. A devotee of Mahaperiyava, he would visit him whenever work permitted but all his decisions centred on the grace of Mahaperiyava. His first child, a daughter was afflicted by polio and he thou

EVR Periyar: A checkup on facts & propaganda

If you were ever revolted by the plethora of roadside statues in India, then credit for this ever rising craze should go to that one man tsunami that brought about that infamous “Statue Culture “ to EV Ramasamy Naicker known as Periyar to his followers. As was usual with Dravidian politics, this focus and obsession of statues  ironically began as an anti idol movement to reason out faith and beliefs of Hinduism to pamper to Islamic and Christian fundamentalists and as admiration of anything western.  Breaking of idols of Lord Ganesha in Salem when Congress ruled Tamilnadu and India during early 1950s didn’t elicit even murmurs of intolerance as Hindus were subdued for over a thousand years and Secular congress was a mere continuation of that colonial British rule that was indifferent and insensitive to majoritarian Hindu sentiments. EVR called Idols as lifeless stones and called out those beliefs of honouring and worshipping them as crass and superstitious. Because of fundamental con

Recent Experience at Kamakshi’s abode Kanchipuram

After going through the trauma of spinal fractures & the surgery that followed it was my first visit to Kanchipuram in three years. Earlier I have had extensive contacts for darshan as a government official but this time we decided we will be just another ordinary disciples.  We had one Chandrasekar, a junior employee now retired to guide us to temples. When we reached Kamakshi temple, we found huge crowd of thousands. I was wondering how we will have darshan of Lokamata but was sure that She will find a way for us. I was apprehensive about standing in the queue as I was scared someone might push me and hurt my back inadvertently. As we paused in confusion, I found a friend who is a Judge of Madras High Court entering the temple in all paraphernalia with his family. I thought of shouting out for him but something deep down restrained me. Our chaperone Chandrasekhar made few honest phone calls and took us near the back door VIP entrance where a hundred were waiting for darshan. Sudd
