Hyderabad, Rape and Encounter

Its exciting to hear that the arrested rapists were shot dead in an encounter by Police  under pitch dark. We like cinematic drama in real life and Telangana Police successfully transformed criticism on their inability to prevent a gruesome rape plus murder into a brilliant PR move by eliminating their suspects. Of course, with the usual stereotyped story that follows every police encounter case in India like the suspects trying to flee, attempting to steal pistol despite being hand cuffed, etc.

On second thoughts, we will now never get to verify the facts of the case. The boys and men were pissed drunk and were not in their senses when they committed the crime, if they were the real criminals. They needed to be brought before law and Law should have ensured justice. But having lost faith in our system and instigated by a frenzied media, people are deeply hurt and want justice as in Wild West movies. Soul satisfying drama indeed! Until we become victims.

My father who spent four decades in Revenue dept had told me that in most cases Police connive with Law breakers. I wish he was wrong in his statement. A random check on ‘crimes by police’ on internet brings shocking results. But logically, such encounters do not happen in developed nations. A suspect is addressed as ‘Sir’, by Police because indirectly as tax payer, he is their master. Yes, there are exceptions of police violence on innocent citizens even in US. In India, police claim that such  civilised cultured responses won’t work. Police have to act like East India company, ruthless and in total disregard to the sensibilities of the suspects. Indians need to be recognised as human too and the system is yet to acknowledge them as humans despite independence from the British. The moment one becomes a suspect, one became a criminal. No such qualms on politicians and others who indulge in grave economic offences that affect millions of lives. Police reforms is the need of the hour. With every police station painted red, the colour of warning, it’s still a long way for the system to become friends of the people.

There was this rich politician who raped and barbecued a lady in Delhi. Even middle class rapists do not face encounters. But poor, dumb, stupid criminals are done and dusted instantly and we enjoy this adrenaline shot. What if, they were innocent? And, the real criminals had got away. Now that the curtains have been drawn on the Hyderabad rape case, we will never know. But let’s savour the instant justice dished out to the victim’s family. Let’s wait for next horror to happen to excite our senses. Didn’t we enjoy the heroics of the protagonist who enters a rape scene in movies to save the harried girl? Was the focus of the scene, on rape or on saving the girl? I never got to understand. Many movies portray hero as one who is uneducated, poor, a street rowdy but manages to get the best girl in town. I know instances of boys who believe that they will get lucky like these heroes and live prosperous forever without lifting a finger on hard work.

Any culture to sustain must respect others. If we do not like a thought or a post of a friend, we instantly unfriend him or her. We need to respect lives, living beings, and be fair even to those whom we hate. With more than 30000 rapes yearly in India, we need to return to culture. But isn’t culture outdated in this millennium? Fun has been redefined as losing one’s mind. There are negative signs but I would like to be proven wrong. Social media has turned barbaric with abuses and counter abuses. Violence is what we practice everyday. It’s sad that none is batting for sanity. Till then, let’s grieve for rapes and exult about encounters.

EVR Periyar: A checkup on facts & propaganda

If you were ever revolted by the plethora of roadside statues in India, then credit for this ever rising craze should go to that one man tsunami that brought about that infamous “Statue Culture “ to EV Ramasamy Naicker known as Periyar to his followers. As was usual with Dravidian politics, this focus and obsession of statues  ironically began as an anti idol movement to reason out faith and beliefs of Hinduism to pamper to Islamic and Christian fundamentalists and as admiration of anything western.  Breaking of idols of Lord Ganesha in Salem when Congress ruled Tamilnadu and India during early 1950s didn’t elicit even murmurs of intolerance as Hindus were subdued for over a thousand years and Secular congress was a mere continuation of that colonial British rule that was indifferent and insensitive to majoritarian Hindu sentiments. EVR called Idols as lifeless stones and called out those beliefs of honouring and worshipping them as crass and superstitious. Because of fundamental con

Recent Experience at Kamakshi’s abode Kanchipuram

After going through the trauma of spinal fractures & the surgery that followed it was my first visit to Kanchipuram in three years. Earlier I have had extensive contacts for darshan as a government official but this time we decided we will be just another ordinary disciples.  We had one Chandrasekar, a junior employee now retired to guide us to temples. When we reached Kamakshi temple, we found huge crowd of thousands. I was wondering how we will have darshan of Lokamata but was sure that She will find a way for us. I was apprehensive about standing in the queue as I was scared someone might push me and hurt my back inadvertently. As we paused in confusion, I found a friend who is a Judge of Madras High Court entering the temple in all paraphernalia with his family. I thought of shouting out for him but something deep down restrained me. Our chaperone Chandrasekhar made few honest phone calls and took us near the back door VIP entrance where a hundred were waiting for darshan. Sudd
